Bakery Sustainability

From the start, CraftMark Bakery was designed to be a more sustainable bakery. Our baked goods manufacturing facility was built using a minimum of 25% recycled materials, with a focus on locally available structural resources, reducing our bakery carbon footprint. Even our strategic location was chosen to reduce the distance and carbon fuel required to bring wholesale baked goods to the marketplace, reducing the impact of so-called “food miles.”

A Vision Toward Bakery Carbon Footprint Reduction

But our continuing best practices toward greater commercial bakery sustainability — such as energy use reduction using motion and timer-based LED lighting, or sourcing 80% of our clean label bakery ingredients locally for carbon footprint reduction — underscore our ongoing commitment to doing better for our planet.

We think it is good for business, too.

Zero Waste Bakery Best Practices

We pride ourselves on operating a zero-waste-to-landfill facility. Bakery residuals are sent to a local feed manufacturer to be recycled and developed into feed rations, and our advanced materials recycling practices allow us to recycle any packaging for our baked goods ingredients such as metal, glass, plastic and cardboard.

Award Winning Sustainable Bakery

The IBIE BEST in Baking Awards program recognizes commercial bakery suppliers that, in their support of the baking industry, have made significant environmental achievements.

In 2016 CraftMark Bakery was honored for our sustainable bakery practices. IBIE’s bakery sustainability award recognizes eco best practices in commercial bakery, equipment, ingredients sourcing, packaging, technology, or other processes that improve efficiency, reduce energy use, reduce bakery carbon footprint, reduce environmental impact, or otherwise improves the sustainability of the baking industry. IBIE recognized CraftMark Bakery for demonstrating bakery manufacturing practices that:

  • Foster energy and water conservation

  • Decrease landfill waste

  • Promote overall reduction in environmental impact

A Leader for More Sustainable Palm Oil

At CraftMark Bakery we recognize the critical importance of balancing the needs for quality baked goods ingredients with the long term sustainability of sensitive eco-systems in places like Indonesia.

We are a Member of the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), currently the best option for sourcing more ethical and responsible palm oil. Through this relationship, we can offer Mass Balance palm oil to our private label bakery customers who require a more sustainable palm oil option. Our bakery R&D experts specialize in clean label baked goods formulation, and we often take on the process of reformulating customers’ cookie, muffin, and baked goods recipes to remove problematic ingredients and rely instead on more responsible options.

Let’s Talk About Sustainable Bakery Food

If you’d like to transition the manufacture of your brand’s baked goods over to a more sustainable bakery partner, and explore new approaches for supply chain carbon footprint reduction, contact our bakery to start the conversation.

We’ve helped many of our customers in the Foodservice and In-Store Bakery markets reformulate their frozen cookie dough, sandwich bread dough, and muffins to use more sustainable ingredients and convert to a clean label baked goods recipe, all while reducing the impact of food miles.
